A theory is presented for the effect of axial strain on the stiffness and damping of a rubber strip clamped at its ends and deformed laterally. Experiments on such a system were carried out, varying the tensile strain and the sample dimensions. Both free and forced oscillations were used, the former giving more accurate results for the damping. The results were compared with the theoretical predictions with very good agreement. The work suggests that it may be possible to vary the damping of an engineering component by design of the shape and mode of application of the forces, rather than by variation of the rubber compound out of which it is made. This presents possible advantages with regard to overall performance of the component, for example, the temperature sensitivity. It also suggests a mechanism for possible artefacts in characterisation tests for elastic and loss moduli of the material. 相似文献

ABSTRACTSpitting behaviour of four casted and powder metallurgy ingots used in the fabrication of NiCoCrAlY-type environmental protective coatings by electron beam physical vapour deposition was investigated and correlated with ingot microstructures and compositions. Spits found in the coatings mainly consisted of the Ni5Y phase precipitated in the β-NiAl matrix while their typical size exceeded 50?µm. Spitting was less pronounced for ingots having a higher Cr content, larger size of γ-Ni(Co, Cr) precipitates formed within β-NiAl grains and narrower transitional zone formed at the interface between molten and unmolten ingot regions and consisting of coarsened β grains. The synthesis of new Xenes and their potential applications prototypes have achieved significant milestones so far. However, to date the realization of Xene heterostructures in analogy with the well known van der Waals heterostructures remains an unresolved issue. Here, a Xene heterostructure concept based on the epitaxial combination of silicene and stanene on Ag(111) is introduced, and how one Xene layer enables another Xene layer of a different nature to grow on top is demonstrated. Single-phase (4 × 4) silicene is synthesized using stanene as a template, and stanene is grown on top of silicene on the other way around. In both heterostructures, in situ and ex situ probes confirm layer-by-layer growth without intercalations and intermixing. Modeling via density functional theory shows that the atomic layers in the heterostructures are strongly interacting, and hexagonal symmetry conservation in each individual layer is sequence selective. The results provide a substantial step toward currently missing Xene heterostructures and may inspire new paths for atomic-scale materials engineering. 相似文献
